Reading Reflection 2

1. The book I chose to read for this assignment is Makers: The New Industrial Revolution by Chris Anderson. The overall argument of the book is that the society is going to enter a "Makers Movement" in the future. Anderson claims that as technology advances, we are soon going to enter another industrial revolution. This time, the revolution revolves around individuals producing products in their own homes through digital softwares.

2. The content of the book connected with what ENT3003 is teaching me in the way that it shows the endless possibilities of thinking outside the box. By breaking free from the conventional way of thinking or conducting business, you are able to achieve far more than you can imagine. In the novel, Anderson talks about how a printer is often viewed as a one-dimensional tool. However, he views it also as a revolutionary act, a political statement, and so much more.

3. If I were to create an exercise around this book, I'd probably have the students possibly draft up a design of their own production business and what type of products they would manufacture and a brief explanation of their customers and industry.

4. A part of the book that surprised me was when Anderson described the new movement as similar to Second Industrial Revolution. I found this out of line with my expectations because I thought that so much has changed not only technology wise, but as a society in general. That for this futuristic movement to have many similarities to one that happened a century ago caught me by surprise.

  1. After reading your post, I am for sure adding this to my reading list. I am fascinated by the notion of underutilized assets and using globalization and technology to use them to capacity. That is the production out of your underutilized home and using software in your example. I like the relationship you draw in the provocation of innovation and breaking away from norms to Dr. Pryor’s lectures. I think I would have also shared your reaction to the comparison of the second Industrial Revolution. I think technology has materially exceeded the norm and connected so many people, like never before.

  2. Hello Yung-Teng,

I found your exercise interesting. Often times, people look at the products and the success of it but don't really look at the design or how it was manufactured. It's important to consider these factors and reflect on them. Not only will it help generate ideas for your own business, but it will help consumers be more mindful of the products and how it came to be within its industry. I too see the similarities between the new movement as the Second Industrial Revolution - both drastically increased the connectivity of people, shortened the distance between them, and led to so many new developments in various areas (society, development, economies, politics, globalization, etc.).

  3. Hey Yung-Teng,

For this assignment, I read a completely different book that focused more on the ways entrepreneurs can succeed through their failures and the habits one must have to establish a healthy perspective on life and business. So, reading your reflection was especially interesting for me, since your book offers more invaluable information on business. From what I read, your review was very informative and I appreciated reading your reflection. Keep up the good work!
